Psychiatrists study, diagnose and treat disorders, illness, and abnormalities of the mind with a combination of psychotherapy and medication. They can practice generally or specialize in areas such as child psychiatry, substance abuse, or social/development disorders.
To become a psychiatrist, you need first to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in psychiatry. After that, you will need to get into medical school and study to become a medical doctor. You will also need to complete a four-year residency in psychiatry and after graduating, you have to pass the certification exams to get a license to practice psychiatry.
